About

April ZayApril Zay is a teaching artist and founder of Hummingbird Arts. Her passion for art began at three years old, and by third grade, she knew she was going to pursue a career as an artist: specifically, as a painter.

April graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC with a BFA in Illustration. She went on to design packaging for high-end companies including Lenox and Waterford Crystal and has collaborated on packaging for companies like Macy’s and Kate Spade.

April founded Hummingbird Arts in 2006, teaching private art lessons to students of all ages. She went on to run classes and workshops for Grounds for Sculpture, Bright Horizons Child Development Center, North Brunswick Public Library, Inclusive Montessori, Bucks County Classical Arts Center, and many other locations. In 2016, she relocated from her home to a newer, larger studio in Hamilton.

Today, April continues to work as a teaching artist while also crafting jewellery and creating custom oil paintings. She lives in Hamilton with her husband Brian; her two sons, Elijah and Gabriel; and their Akita, Roxy.

“It all started with a little glass blown hummingbird tucked back on a shelf in a Santa Fe shop. I was 12 and spent my allowance to buy it, and that was the beginning of my hummingbird collection, an eclectic collection of unique pieces from special places or special people. Hummingbirds remind me of the southwest where I spent much of my childhood and it was the place that inspired me artistically.” ~ April Zay
