About

April ZayApril Zay is a working artist who founded Hummingbird Arts in 2006.  Before relocating to a new, larger studio in 2016, she taught art at her home studio and throughout Central NJ and Bucks County for the past decade.

April has run workshops and classes at the Grounds For Sculpture, Bright Horizons Child Development Center, North Brunswick Public Library, Inclusive Montessori, Bucks County Classical Arts Center, and many other locations.

Having earned a BFA in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, April spent many years working as a packaging and  graphic designer for high-end companies, including Lenox China and Waterford Crystal. She has also collaborated on packaging for companies, such as Macy’s and Kate Spade.

Although she is a graphic designer, photographer, and painter, her greatest joy is sharing her knowledge and love of art through teaching, especially inspiring children’s creativity.

“It all started with a little glass blown hummingbird tucked back on a shelf in a Santa Fe shop. I was 12 and spent my allowance to buy it, and that was the beginning of my hummingbird collection, an eclectic collection of unique pieces from special places or special people. Hummingbirds remind me of the southwest where I spent much of my childhood and it was the place that inspired me artistically.” ~ April Zay
